This involved a refurbishment of an historic monument on the Wildland Ltd Estate Kinloch. Castle Varrich overlooks the Kyle of Tongue and is seen from all points in the village. Dating from 1100 AD it is little more than a ruin today. The local community council lobbied hard for some work to be done to consolidate the ruins.
A joint project was done between Wildland and Historic Environment Scotland. Not only were the walls consolidated, but a viewing platform accessed by a spiral stairway has been provided. Whilst this was essentially a project to repair a derelict monument on a Wildland Estate, the consultation with local community and contribution from HES has enabled an attractive viewing platform to be built within the castle tower. It has become a valuable tourist attraction in Tongue and on the NC500.
